If you ask a trad Christian the one bible verse that sums up their religion it comes right out:  John 3.16.

Got loves us and wants us to love him.  Obedience to God is what happens when we love him.  The Israelites always tried to put the obedience first and it's never worked.

In the West, that "love" is the transcendental tradition. It must be de-simplisticized in order to make sense.
